You've enquired about the hotel's laundry service but the receptionist just hands you an iron. Here's five easy steps to do it the right way.

First things first. Find out what material your shirt is made of by looking at the tag. Plug the iron in and adjust the heat setting accordingly. High temperatures for 100 per cent cottons and linens, medium heat for wools and cotton blends and low for polyester, rayon, nylon, silk, acetate and acrylic. Only fill the iron with water if you want the steam function for cottons and linens. And after all this, if you're only going to wear a jumper over the top, just save time and iron the collar.

  • Steam the back of the collar first, then the front. Iron it a little at a time to avoid creasing it even more.
  • Open out the cuffs and iron them inside and then outside. Be careful not to melt plastic buttons with the heat.

  • Fit one front panel of the shirt to the board so that it's snug and press. Try downward, sweeping motions.
  • Then do the back of the shirt before rotating on to the last front panel. Once complete, place on a hanger.
