Dubai: A massive surge in consumer IT spend across the Middle East and Africa, a sizeable chunk of which belongs to the GCC, has laid the perfect foundation for the 18th edition of GITEX Shopper and Consumer Electronics Expo. The event is all set to emulate the outstanding achievements of previous editions with more big names, additional events and more choices adding to the appeal of the show. Trixee Loh, Senior Vice President, Exhibitions and Events Management of Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), the organiser of the show, feels that the timing of GITEX Shopper coincides perfectly with the new consumer-shopping trend.
"IT and electronics have become an integral part of people's everyday lives, be it at work or home. This is being reflected in the increased spend on consumer electronics across the region, and with GITEX Shopper's reputation for always showcasing the latest from across the globe, we are confident that this year's event will exceed all expectations," said Loh. Prominent regional retailers as well as established international brand names are returning to the event with an enhanced presence this year, buoyed by the fact that the people of the region are spending more money than ever before on consumer electronics and mobility products. According to research firm IDC, IT spending in the Middle East and Africa will amount to $40 billion in 2008 alone, and the Gulf countries will account for nearly 23 per cent of that total.
