Dubai: With Gitex just around the corner, a lot of people have been asking this question. Here are some things to consider before buying.
1. Does the computer have a video card? This is an important consideration for potential PC (non-Mac and Linux) buyers, since Windows Vista is the only operating system Microsoft is shipping now.
Vista is very graphic intensive, and a good video card can significantly improve performance. Most desktop computers come with video cards installed, but not all laptops come with this hardware. Don't assume there is one there. Make sure a video card is listed among the computer's features.
2. Which operating system does the computer have? Vista has gotten a bad rap recently, but the operating system does have its positive points.
However, it's not for everyone, and many consumers today are switching to Macs or a Linux-based machines as an alternative to Vista.

3. Ask about support. Many PC brands offer such services as pick-up and delivery when you have a problem with your machine, and a growing number of brands actually have service centres here in the UAE.
If the machine you purchase isn't supported locally, you may be looking at expended downtime while you wait for parts to be delivered from overseas.
4. How much memory does the machine have? Some systems today still ship with only 512 megabytes of memory.
You may be able to squeak by with that, but if you're doing anything more complex than email or basic web surfing, 512 megabytes just won't cut it. Two gigabytes of memory should be the minimum amount of memory your new systems comes with.
