Brussels: Web browser company Opera said it has filed a complaint with the European Commission about software giant Microsoft.

The complaint calls on the company to allow consumers the chance to choose the web browsing software which comes with the Windows operating system.

It also alleges that Microsoft was holding developers back from making compatible programmes by not following accepted standards.

Microsoft had no immediate comment, because it had not
seen details of the complaint.

The Norwegian company says it is asking EU regulators to apply the principles of their antitrust ruling against Microsoft - upheld by an EU court in September – to Internet software.

That ruling required Microsoft to market a version of Windows without its media player program.

Opera claim Microsoft is abusing its monopoly power by giving away its Internet Explorer with Windows and not offering alternative programs.
