Hongkong: Ousted Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra said on Tuesday he would return from exile next year to face corruption charges.
Thaksin said he expected to return to Thailand from exile "by April at the latest".
The exiled former leader, however, said that he would not resume his career in politics, but would act as adviser to the People Power Party (PPP) if asked.
On Tuesday, the election commission announced the PPP has won 233 of 480 seats in the lower house of parliament.
Thaksin said he wanted to prove himself innocent of corruption charges brought by investigators appointed by the military after the September 2006 coup.
"I want to ... go back and live my life as a normal citizen," he said.
The PPP has pledged it would change the constitution to allow the former leader to return to Thailand.
