Tbili: Georgia’s opposition is preparing for a massive protest as President Mikheil Saakashvili claimed victory in a snap presidential election on Sunday.

Exit polls suggested that Saakashvili won the elections with 53.8 per cent of the vote.

However, opposition leader Levan Gachechiladze also claimed victory, saying that the exit poll was fraudulent.

"We actually won in almost every precinct," Gachechiladze claimed, calling on "all Georgia" to rally in Tbilisi on Sunday "to celebrate our victory."

Saturday's election was called a year early to defuse unrest in the increasingly strategic former Soviet republic.

More than 12 hours after polls closed the Central Election Commission had only published results for 105 of the more than 3,300 precincts across Georgia.

International observers from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe were due to release a report on the election's fairness on Sunday.
