N'Djamena: Chad's president has declared a state of emergency to last 15 days from Friday.

President Idriss Deby said in a televised speech on Thursday that the alert is needed after rebel attacks in and around the capital.

Deby said the decree instituted "measures important and urgent to maintain order, guarantee stability and assure the good functioning of the state."

More than 160 people were killed and 1,000 wounde din the fighting between rebels and forces loyal to Deby around the presidential palace from February 2 to 3.

Deby's government has been conducting house-to-house searches in the capital looking for rebels, who had attacked Deby in efforts to force his ouster..
