Harare: Zimbabwe’s opposition said on Sunday it had won presidential elections as the ruling party warned them against any early claims of victory.

Election officials said they will begin announcing the result of the presidential, parliamentary and local polls.

Incumbent president Robert Mugabe has warned his opponents that premature victory claims would amount to an attempted coup.

These are most crucial elections since the country’s independence.

Mugabe faces the most formidable challenge from MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and ruling ZANU-PF party defector Simba Makoni, who both campaigned on the collapse of Zimbabwe’s economy.

African election observers have said they have detected fraud in the ballot, although Mugabe denies vote rigging allegations.
