Given the rising tensions between various parties, the Kuwaiti elections today stand at a critical juncture. In order to take the democratic process forward, it is crucial that all groups involved maintain consensus and agree on a resolution that takes into account the long-term results.
It was unfortunate that the tensions between tribesmen and the government reached a heightened level in which violence and force had been resorted to. The tribesmen's insistence on holding elections prior to the May 17 parliamentary polls is undoubtedly illegal and hence unacceptable.
The use of excessive means by officials to quell it was unnecessary as well. Between the two extreme positions, there should be a middle ground where all parties can agree to, a task that may not simple yet not impossible to achieve.
Allowing the Kuwaiti electoral process to be coloured by tribal streaks would prove to be dangerous for everyone involved, including the tribesmen.
Instead, national unity should be maintained and strongly supported if the electoral process is to uphold its basic principles of being a democracy for all.
The upcoming elections in Kuwait would attest to be significant. But the outcome would be determined depending on how the differences are bridged and consolidated.
