Paris, France: Following a spate of pirate attacks near Somalia, France and the United States said they are drafting a United Nations resolution to arrest pirates.
France's UN ambassador Jean-Maurice Ripert said the resolution would authorise foreign governments to arrest pirates in territorial waters and prosecute suspects.
"We want to do it fast, but it could take one or two weeks because it has to be by consensus—it is not confrontational," Ripert said.
In the latest attack on Sunday, pirates hijacked a Spanish tuna boat was hijacked off the coast of Somalia. Pirates also hijacked a French luxury boat earlier this month.
