Islamabad: Pakistan's army chief will ask President Pervez Musharraf to resign within a week, according to a newspaper report quoting a senior government official.

Pakistan's ruling coalition, led by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), announced on Thursday it would impeach Musharraf and re-seat the judges.

The Telegraph quoted a senior PPP official as saying that the army has "whispered in Musharraf's ear that it is time to leave".

"Over the next few days they will make it clear to him [Musharraf] that a protracted battle [against impeachment] is not in Pakistan's interests," the official added.

On Friday, Army Chief of Staff Ashfaq Kiyani spent a second day in conference with his senior commanders. Kiyani has publicly declared himself neutral on Pakistan's politics.
