Dubai: Four Kenyan salesmen on Thursday pleaded not guilty to charges of beating up a compatriot, a waiter, who bled to death in his bedroom, and brutally injuring his brother.
Court records said the alleged assailants had severely beaten the Kenyan brothers. They then carried them into the bedroom where the younger brother, B.M., succumbed to his injuries the next morning.
The Public Prosecution charged the defendants, J.M. and R.K., both 26, and B.K. and J.N., both 25, with kicking and punching B.M. and causing critical injuries that led to his death eight hours after the assault. They were also charged with critically injuring the elder brother, P.M., aged 37.
When confronted with the charges before the Dubai Court of First Instance, they pleaded innocent.
The elder brother testified before the Public Prosecution: "I went to spend some time at my brother's place in Satwa, where he shares an Arabic villa along with some Kenyan bachelors. We had some drinks."
"My brother's room-mate, S., passed by, greeted us and went to sleep around 2am. B.K. joined us for a drink, although he was already drunk. B.K. asked my brother not to call him a certain name, and then slapped him.
"Then he went to his room and returned with the rest of the suspects. They assaulted my brother and me. They kicked and punched us really badly," P.M. said.
A 29-year-old Kenyan waiter, J.N., who lives in the same villa, said he had known the deceased for eight years. "Two of the attackers carried the deceased and walked into the room. They dropped him on the ground. He was unconscious and breathing heavily. The other suspects brought the elder brother, whose body was covered with blood. He was conscious but couldn't move."
Records said the beaten up victims were left to sleep in the bedroom until the next morning. "My brother was bleeding heavily and white foam came out from his mouth. Paramedics pronounced him dead at about 11pm."
Police arrested the suspects shortly after the incident.
