Dubai: Dubai Police have warned residents not to leave their homes unguarded and always take proper precautions while going out.
The warning came after police arrested a Bangladeshi national on charges of committing thefts in various villas in Dubai's posh localities, including Emirates Hills and Arabian Ranches.
The criminal broke into several villas, stole possessions including laptops, cameras and jewellery, police said in a press release on Tuesday.
An Arab national who resides in one of the villas informed Dubai Police of a theft that took place at his house in July. He said that the watchguard at his villa informed him that his briefcase was found dumped and empty outside the villa. The resident immediately reported the incident to the police.
Police formed a search team who unravelled the villain's scheme and were able to identify him on Sunday. He was caught near his residence in Hor Al Anz area with a sum of Dh7,000. Police reported that he tried to escape as soon as he saw policemen in the area, but to no avail.
M.S. then confessed to 11 thefts which he had committed, while using a rented car for transportation. He explained that the thefts took careful planning to ensure that the residents had completely left the house and located the entrance and exit paths.
The stolen goods were recovered, and the villain was arrested and referred to the Public Prosecution for further investigations.
This incident comes after a series of similar thefts that took place over the past three months when many residents leave their houses for the summer holiday.
Register with police
You can take advantage of the free security services offered by Dubai Police to secure the safety of your home while on vacation. Police will keep an eye on your villa or apartment if you register with the police.
A video monitoring device will be placed in your home while you are away and you can even monitor your home through the internet.
To apply for the service in Dubai log on to www.dubaipolice.gov.ae and follow instructions in the link 'Home Safety'. Applicants will have to check out some items to avail of the service.
Things to do before you leave:
- Make sure doors and windows are locked. Fix bolts for extra safety.
- Make sure the wardrobe or safes, where you keep your jewellery, are securely locked. Better still, put jewellery and other valuables in a safety deposit box in a bank.
- Don't leave your car keys lying around where they can easily be taken.
- Tell your relatives or a friend to periodically check your house while you are away.
