Dubai: A worker has pleaded not guilty to running a gambling den on a building rooftop and charging Dh10 per gambler.
The Public Prosecution charged the 45-year-old Pakistani worker with running a gambling den and allowing others to gamble on his premises.
Another suspect, who is still at large, has also been charged with aiding and abetting the worker.
The suspect, identified as R.A., and who is currently detained, dismissed the accusations when he appeared before Presiding Judge Dr Ali Al Galadari of the Dubai Court of First Instance.
A first corporal of Dubai police testified: "An informant alerted us that a number of Asians were gambling on the rooftop of a building in Naif."
"We raided the building and arrested four suspects along with R.A. who was running the gambling den. Upon his arrest, the 45-year-old claimed that the owner asked him to run the place for gambling and left the country."
Charity
A first sergeant of Dubai police stated: "The four men who were arrested for gambling confirmed that R.A. collected Dh10 each from them and allowed them to gamble."
Public Prosecution records said the suspect admitted that he collected money from the four but he alleged that "it was for charity".
A verdict will be announced next month.
