Abu Dhabi: The Traffic and Licensing Department has introduced a new system whereby the owner of a vehicle needs to present his national identification card before being able to transfer or register a vehicle, a senior official said.
The department introduced the identity card system to eliminate any kind of fraudulent practices, said Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Mayoof Al Ketbi, Director of the Vehicle Licensing Department.
"The new system does not allow transactions such as transfer or registration unless the owner is identified by the card," he said.
Precaution
Employees of the traffic department also might soon have to use their fingerprints to log on to their system rather than passwords, Al Ketbi said, adding that the measure is a precaution against malpractice.
The decision comes close on the heels of the arrest of an employee of the department in connection with a Dh13 million car fraud.
The employee, identified only as Sergeant M. K, 33-years-old, helped a former employee of the department illegally sell 17 latest BMWs registered as tourist cars.
M.K used the computers of his colleagues while they were gone for prayer or during their absence from the office to transfer, register and cancel cars belonging to a car rental company owned by a 40-year -old Emirati S.Z, who worked in the same department earlier.
The plan was to sell and export the vehicles before police received a tip-off and foiled the attempt.
