Riyadh: Two US Professors, a German, an Iraqi and a Tunisian have been announced as winners of King Faisal International Prize (KFIP) in medicine, science and Arabic literature respectively.

The winners' names were disclosed on Monday evening by Prince Khalid Al Faisal Bin Abdul Aziz, governor of Makkah region, director general of King Faisal Charity and chairman of the prize commission.

Disqualification

The KFIP for Islamic Studies for the year 2008 was withheld as the nominated works were disqualified. The subject of that prize was "The Rules Governing International Relations in Islam During Peace and War".

Earlier this week, the KFIP to the service of Islam was awarded to King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz.

The prize for Arabic Language and Literature was shared by Professor Ahmad Matloob Al Nasiri, from Iraq, and Professor Mohammad Rashad Al Salih Hamzaoui, a Tunisian, in recognition of their work in the field of Arabic terminology.

This year's KFIP in medicine was shared by Professor Donald Dean Trunkey, from United States and his countryman Professor Basil Arthur Pruitt, for their outstanding work in the field of trauma management.

The prize in the field of science was awarded to Professor Rudiger Wehner, from Germany, for his efforts in the field of biology.

Nominations: Agfund awards

The Arab Gulf Programme for United Nations Development Organisations (AGFUND), has called on international and regional organisations as well as non-governmental organisations (NGOs), universities and research centres worldwide to present their nominations for the AGFUND Award for Combating Vision Imparity.

The award honours work done by international bodies, national NGOs and individuals in separate categories.

The AGFUND international award offers a prize of Dh1.1m distributed among the three branches. The award commission includes a number of prominent international personalities.
