Riyadh: The number of spinsters in Saudi Arabia has reached 180,413, according to a demographic survey conducted in 2007.
The survey classified spinsters as women who had reached the age of 30 years or above without getting married.
It revealed the rate of spinsterhood amounted to 2.6 per cent last year out of the total number of women in Saudi Arabia. This means that one out of every 16 women in Saudi Arabia is classified as a spinster.
The study also revealed that the rate of divorced women in Saudi Arabia amounted to 2.4 per cent in 2007.
The survey conducted by the Central Department of Statistics and Information of the Ministry of Finance and Planning and released here yesterday pointed out that the kingdom's population reached 23,980,843 in the past year compared to 22,678,262 in 2004 with an increase rate of 5.74 per cent. The annual growth rate of the population was 2.3 per cent.

As for division of the population by sex, the survey showed males constitute 55.5 per cent.
According to the survey, the number of Saudi citizens reached 17,493,364 in 2007 compared to 16,527,340 in 2004, with an increase rate of 5.8 per cent and an annual growth rate of 2.3 per cent. This represents 72.9 per cent of the total population in Saudi Arabia.
The number of Saudi citizens who are younger than 15 years old is 37.2 per cent while the rate of those above 65 is 3.5 per cent.
The survey also showed that 97.4 per cent of Saudi women married below the age of 30 years old while only 2.6 per cent married at the age of 30 or above.
As for the scale of balance between the two sexes in Saudi Arabia, the survey revealed that there are 102 Saudi males for every 100 females. This stands within the normal range.
However the population structure for non-Saudis living in Saudi Arabia is 223 males for every 100 females. This imbalance is attributed to the increase of demand for male manpower.
