Sana'a: Five Al Qaida suspects were detained in Al Quten area of Sayoun, in the Hudurmout province in eastern Yemen, a security source saidon Tuesday.

The five men were not hiding, but they were under lenient house arrest, the source said.

The arrests were said to be a measure to prevent retaliatory action after five Al Qaida operatives were killed last week.

One suspect attempted to resist arrest but his family convinced him to surrender, the source told Gulf News.

Three of the suspects who are in their twenties have continuously attempted to go to Iraq to engage in jihad, but have been arrested at the Syrian-Iraqi borders and sent back to Yemen.

Since being sent back to Yemen, the suspects were required by authorities to sign in every month at the local security agency in Sayoun.

Two of the men stopped signing in about three months ago, the source said.
