The passing away of the grand master of Arab cinema, Yousuf Shaheen, is a major loss not only for this region, but also for the rest of the world. Shaheen gave us some of Egyptian cinemas' greatest classics; who could forget his take on the classic story of Salah Al Deen or his Alexandria trilogy?
Known as probably the most independent of Arab film-makers, Shaheen made it a habit to tackle controversial topics in his films, such as American foreign policy and police abuse in Egypt. His political views and activities also made an impact on the public scene. People from all walks of life and of different age groups were familiar with his work.
Therefore, it was only fitting to see hundreds of mourners, including actors and officials, gathering at Cairo's Roman Catholic Church to bid farewell to Arab cinema's most celebrated director. Shaheen leaves a big void behind and his magical cinematographic touch will forever be missed.
