The decision taken by Syria to establish formal diplomatic relations with Lebanon is significant and extremely important. It would not only pave the way for the future of relations between the two countries, but would also assist in bringing a conclusion to any unresolved issues that have yet to be addressed.
Relations between the two countries have been unnecessarily strained for a long time. Over the decades, many factors have obstructed the establishment of healthy, trustful and productive ties. But under the recent Syrian decree, full diplomatic relations are to be established. This new shift is the result of a better understanding between the two states over the past few months and the positive outcome of the Damascus summit between Syrian President Bashar Al Assad and his Lebanese counterpart Michel Sulaiman.
There are many factors that would enable the Syrian-Lebanese relations to thrive. First, both sides should abide by the agreements that they have reached thus far. Second, respect for each other's sovereignty is a must. Finally, various measures of confidence building should be sought after and applied. Yet given the complexities surrounding the ties between the two countries, an extensive and persistent effort would be required if matters are to be taken forward. This is being said given the changes taking place in the global environment as well as how these changes affect the region. Hence, mending relations would only bring stability to both countries.
Building bridges was undoubtedly a challenge, but maintaining and ensuring continuity of this recent diplomatic achievement would be the ultimate test - one that both countries are capable of overcoming.
