Riyadh: US lawyers who are representing Guantanamo detainees will visit Saudi Arabia and Bahrain next month, a Saudi newspaper reported yesterday.

The lawyers will meet family members of the detainees and brief them on their present condition, the paper said. The delegation will comprise 10 US lawyers. Nabeel Rajab, president of the Human Rights Centre in Bahrain, said his centre was working to arrange such a meeting, in coordination with the US and Saudi lawyers.

"The US lawyers will also hold talks with representatives of the Saudi Human Rights Society," the Saudi daily Eqtisadiah quoting him as saying.

The number of Saudis in Guantanamo prison is about 115. According to Rajab, the meeting is aimed at realising coordination between the Saudi Human Rights Society and its counterparts worldwide as well as with US lawyers in putting an end to the ordeal of the detainees' families.

The initiative came in the midst of mounting international pressure on the US to carry out justice following reports of abuse and prolonged delays in starting trial procedures for detainees. US law prevents foreign lawyers from representing those held at Guantanamo. The US government earlier disclosed it would release some detainees in the near future.
