Dubai: A number of Saudi dissidents living in exile in Western countries are expected to return home soon, a former Saudi dissident was quoted as saying yesterday.

Arabic-language newspaper Al Hayat quoted Abdul Aziz Al Shanbari, a former dissident, as saying "there are contacts with many parties (figures) living in the UK and US, who have expressed their desire to come back home and retreat from their previous thoughts and ideologies."

The talks, according to Al Shanbari, "had made great progress" and paved the way for their return.

Al Shanbari, who returned to Jeddah late last year after living in London for nearly two years, didn't reveal the names of the dissidents expected to return home.

Their number is "very small", he said, adding that they include "a prominent figure whose identity will be revealed once the talks are concluded."
