Riyadh: Yesterday might have been just another summer's day for most people across the world, Saudis however celebrated the first anniversary of the accession of King Abdullah to the throne.

Saudis have described the past year as "a year of blessings and prosperity."

Saudi Arabia has witnessed the launch of several huge economic and educational projects. Many believe that they have been blessed twice - one with the unprecedented rise in world oil prices and with having found a fair and wise King who directed that revenue from exports go to rebuild the country's infrastructure.

Reform

Saudi are calling their beloved new King different names.
However, if I had to choose a name other than the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, I would call him "the People's King."

Since the first day he took over the reins of power following the death of his brother Fahd, King Abdullah has shown wisdom, humanity and diplomacy. He has also shown foresight about the future of his country in such continuously changing times.

His role as a reformer is reflected in all fields and aspects of life, including infrastructure, security and economy.

King Abdullah's attributes, however, can barely be counted.

He not only cares about his country, but is also concerned about the entire Arab and Islamic world.

This year, King Abdullah has achieved what would have taken years in other countries.

His intelligence has led him to focus his attention on a balanced development plan which covers all regions of the country and does not discriminate.

Those who have had the pleasure of meeting the 'King of Hearts' describe him as a noble, simple and humble man.

When he talks, they say, it makes you feel like you are talking to a gracious man, a caring but firm father.

His intelligence and wisdom are clearly reflected through the way he has been dealing with the country's budget. The increase in oil prices has granted the King an ability to implement more plans that aim to benefit the average Saudi.

He directed the surplus towards diversifying the economy to end the country's reliance on oil.

King Abdullah is known in the West as a reformer.

His speech after coming to power proved even to his opponents how much he hates corruption. Since then he has led the fight against corruption by all possible means.
