Riyadh: A study is being conducted to establish a society for social protection in Saudi Arabia, similar to the government's Human Rights Commission launched last year.
The foundation of the society comes as part of the government's efforts to handle the problem of family violence in the kingdom, said a source at the ministry of welfare affairs.
The source said one of the major objectives of the society is to protect children, women, people with special needs and the elderly from physical violence and sexual assault.
The source expects that the society will officially assume its tasks in the next few months.
The institution's members who will be represented in the new society will include the chairman of the Social Protection Committee and Director of Social Affairs in Makkah, Ihsan Tayeb, representative of the Ministry of Justice, Atiyah Al Zahrani, representative of the Ministry of Education, Salem Al Tewaerqi, Fahad Al Sehaili representative of the General Prosecution and Investigation, representative of the Makkah Governorate, Ayman Madah, and Head of the Pediatrics Department at King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital, Enam Al Rabea.
Tayeb said the institution's members will meet in Makkah next week to work out a timetable for launching an awareness campaign, aimed at enlightening the public about the society's tasks and objectives.
He said the campaign will mainly focus on the mechanism of dealing with family violence, as well as acquainting the public with the role of the government agencies represented in the society.
In addition to this the source said a panel consisting of women social workers will present a television programme titled Eve Talks, to raise awareness regarding the goals of the society.
