Riyadh: The Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance has started live transmission of translation of Taraweeh prayers from the Haram Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah in English and French.

"The Saudi Television's channel one and two will transmit live the translation of Taraweeh prayers and the night prayers [Qiyamullail] in English from the Haram Mosque effective from this year's Ramadan," said Shaikh Saleh Al Shaikh, Minister of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance.

According to the minister, the translation of Taraweeh prayers from the Prophet's Mosque is in French. The translation programme is being implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Information, and the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Haram Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque.

In a press statement, the minister said that the new programme aims to help hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, who do not know Arabic, to understand the verses of the Quran and the special prayers made in Taraweeh.

"The translations have been done meticulously and with utmost care and in a sound manner, considering the fundamentals of the Quranic verses.

"There are many people who watch on satellite channels Taraweeh prayers at the two haram mosques in Ramadan, and it is essential to make available to them the meaning of the prayers immediately after listening to the original prayers in Arabic," he said.

Working group

Al Shaikh said the ministry had set up a working group, comprising its senior officials as well as Quran scholars and translators, who are proficient both in Arabic and English or French, a few months ago to complete the preparations for transmission.

According to the minister, this is part of a number of missions and services being extended by the government of Saudi Arabia in spreading the message of the Holy Quran and the Islamic teachings. These included printing and distributing millions of copies of the Quran and its translations in various languages free of charge in various parts of the world and conducting national and international competitions for Quran memorisation, recitation, intonation and interpretation.
