Riyadh: Saudi Arabia will commemorate the achievements of its second monarch, King Saud Bin Abdul Aziz from today.

The King Abdul Aziz Dar of Riyadh will organise a three-day scientific seminar on the life and achievements of King Saud, who became king in 1953, succeeding his father King Abdul Aziz, founder of modern Saudi Arabia.

The seminar, which kicks off today will be regarded as a tribute to one of the founders of modern Saudi Arabia.

The seminar will focus on King Saud's glorious achievements in the political and economic fields as well as his outstanding contributions in reorganising the kingdom's army.

This was announced by Prince Hassam Bin Saud, son of King Saud, and chairman of the preparatory committee for the seminar.

Speaking to Gulf News, Prince Hassam said that the seminar, which will be patronised by Riyadh Governor Prince Salman Bin Abdul Aziz, is aimed at acquainting the younger generation in Saudi Arabia with the glorious history of King Saud and his period of rule as well as the major developments in his era.

"The seminar is aimed at highlighting the personal qualities of my father and illustrating major developments in the political, social, cultural and economic fields in that crucial turning point in the kingdom's history. A database on King Saud will also be prepared and will be made available to the researchers across the world," he said.

According to Hassam, who is the youngest son of King Saud, his father's period of rule (1953-1964) was very significant in the history of modern Saudi Arabia. It coincided with the foundation of modern Saudi Arabia at the hands of his father King Abdul Aziz. King Saud served as the right hand man of King Abdul Aziz.

Regarding the major research papers to be presented at the conference, Prince Hassam said: "We have a total of 130 research papers. The scientific committee for the seminar has short-listed 85 out of them, of these 15 are from outside the kingdom," he said.

Prominent figures will present working papers on achievements of King Saud, including Princess Fahda Bint Saud (Documentation study on the history of King Saud), Saudi researcher Dr Anwar Ishqi, who is the head of the Middle East Centre for Strategic and Legal Studies (King Saud and building of Saudi army), and Major General Mohammad Abu Saq, member of the Shura Council, (King Saud's role in the successful Najran Expedition).
