Dubai: Saudi Ambassador to the US, Prince Turki Al Faisal, has resigned and will return home in a few days, Saudi sources and press reports said.

However, it was not immediately announced why Prince Turki, 61, has suddenly decided to quit the post he held since September 2005.

The Washington Post said yesterday, "Prince Turki Al Faisal flew out of Washington Monday after informing Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and his staff that he would be leaving the post."

But until last evening, there was no formal announcement from Riyadh, a sign that the resignation has not yet been accepted, a Saudi source told Gulf News. "Prince Turki will be in Saudi Arabia within 5 days," the source added.

The Washington Post said the resignation "comes as his brother, Prince Saud Al Faisal, the Saudi Foreign Minister, is ailing." But Saudi sources, who spoke to Gulf News on condition of anonymity, denied any connection.

"I don't have accurate information [on the resignation]," said a source. But "it's not related to the health condition of Prince Saud, which has been known."
