Jeddah: Saudi Arabia freed 18 former Guantanamo Bay detainees on Tuesday after they completed their prison sentences, the Saudi Interior Ministry said.

Quoting Interior Ministry spokesman Mansour bin Sultan Al Turki, the official Saudi Press Agency said, "The remainder, numbering 18 convicts, were freed ... after the necessary conditions were fulfilled."

The men were among 28 Saudi nationals and one resident handed over in 2006 by the United States. Eleven of the men were released by Saudi Arabia earlier in the month.

Many of the men held at Guantanamo Bay were captured in Afghanistan in the US-led war to oust the Taliban after the September 11 attacks. Many have been held for years and nearly all are being held without charge.

Saudi Arabia said it would continue efforts to secure the return of other Saudi citizens.
