Riyadh: A Saudi minister has described the Middle East as the most tumultuous region in the world due to the deterioration of security in Palestine and Iraq and neighbouring Afghanistan and Somalia.

Speaking during an inaugural speech of a seminar under the title: Nato-GCC: Cooperation Within the Framework of Istanbul Initiative, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al Faisal called for the importance of international cooperation to bring peace and stability to the region as the region constitutes an essential part of world security and the stability of the flow of energy supplies and the preservation of the stability of the world economy.

The seminar, which was opened in Riyadh yesterday, was organised by the Riyadh-based Institute of Diplomatic studies in cooperation with the Dubai-based Gulf Studies Centre.

Prince Saud noted that extremist ideologies are growing due to the failure of the international community to settle chronic disputes within the basis of international legitimacy.

"Saudi Arabia believes in the importance of fighting terrorism and extremism and spreading the values of tolerance and moderation as well as combating racial ideologies," the Saudi foreign minister said.

He recalled that King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz has called for establishing an international centre for combating terrorism under the auspices of the United Nations.
