Riyadh: The final communique of the Arab Summit, to be held here tomorrow and on Wednesday, will include a decision to hold a bi-annual Arab consultative summit similar to the GCC consultative summits, Gulf News learned yesterday.
An Arab diplomatic source disclosed that the proposal to hold consultative summits during the period of the regular annual summit which is held in March every year. The source said that the proposal was made by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak during the previous Arab summit held in Khartoum, adding that the proposal was received warmly by Arab leaders.
Issues of importance
"There are a number of concepts for the consultative meetings as some countries, including Egypt, suggested "mini-summits" to be convened whenever there is a need to discuss issues of importance," the diplomatic source said.
The source, who asked not to be named, said that the region is developing at a fast pace and that important issues could not be delayed till the convening of the annual summit.
The source said that the final communiqué will also include a decision for the convening of an Arab economic summit. The source expected this economic summit to be held next year in Kuwait.
Hamas will back consensus - Mesha'al
Hamas will back an Arab consensus on a proposed plan for peace with Israel at Riyadh summit, its political chief reportedly said during a visit yesterday. Khalid Mesha'al said Hamas "will support the Arab consensus and will not differ with the Palestinian official position" which has endorsed the blueprint, an Arab diplomat told AFP.
