Riyadh: In a move to fight corruption and tighten government monitoring of the public wealth, Saudi Arabia decided to establish internal control units in every government department.

The decision was taken by the Saudi cabinet during its weekly meeting, which was chaired by King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz on Monday.

The directors of the units will report directly to the managers of their respective departments, said the decision. Sub-units can be set up in the branches of ministries if required.

Identifying misuse

"The responsibilities of the new unit are to evaluate the internal monitoring regulations in the respective department and make sure that the concerned departments abide by financial rules, regulations and measures.

"The unit has to identify aspects of misuse of financial resources by the department," the decision said.

Earlier, the Saudi cabinet approved a national strategy for combating corruption and set up an authority whose responsibility is to monitor implementation of this strategy. The head of the new authority will have a ministerial rank.

The National Authority for Combating Corruption will report directly to the King.
