Riyadh: Saudi Arabia yesterday welcomed US President George W. Bush's call for a Middle East peace conference, saying the meeting should tackle the core issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
"Saudi Arabia welcomes ... Bush's initiative, which contains important positive elements, including the call to end occupation and establish an independent, contiguous and viable Palestinian state," an official spokesman told the state SPA news agency.
"Regarding the international peace conference due to be held next fall, Saudi Arabia hopes this will come within the framework of a serious international endeavour that tackles the core issues of the conflict," leading to the dismantling of Jewish colonies in the Palestinian territories, he said.
