Sanaa: Yemeni anti-terrorism forces killed two Al Qaeda fugitives who had been sentenced to death for an attack on the French oil tanker Limburg in 2002.
Fawaz Al Rabeie was killed after troops launched a dawn raid on a house in Sanaa where he was hiding. They also killed Mohaamad Daylami, who was hiding in another building, and arrested Rabeie's aide.
Rabeie, a Yemeni, had been sentenced to death for his involvement in the October 2002 attack of the French oil tanker Limburg and planning to kill the American ambassador to Yemen and bomb five Western embassies.
He and 22 others escaped from prison in February, including Jamal Al Badawi, convicted of plotting, preparing and helping carry out the Oct. 12, 2000, attack on the destroyer USS Cole in which 17 American sailors were killed in the Yemeni port of Aden.
Several fugitives who fled the jail have since surrendered to authorities or were captured by police.
The jailbreak raised questions about the Arab state's security measures among its Western allies, with the government has offering a $25,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of any of the fugitives.
