Dubai: New Zealand had to dig deep in Edinburgh to keep alive their hopes of an unprecedented sixth tournament win in the IRB World Sevens Series.
Gordon Tietjens's squad, already crowned overall victors before arriving at Murrayfield for the final tournament of the eight-leg championship, comfortably overcame Scotland in the quarterfinals with Tomasi Cama claiming two of his side's six tries.
But Samoa, who won last weekend's tournament at Twickenham, provided physically robust opposition in the last four and the men in black had to make all their experience count in wet and slippery conditions to come away with a 14-0 victory.
The hero was DJ Forbes who claimed a try in each half, Cama adding both conversions.
New Zealand surged through to their seventh final of the campaign, and were due to face England who overcame Wales in the other semifinal.
