Dubai: Matthew Turner shot an impressive 2-under-par 69, to win the 2006 Nad Al Sheba Club's 5th Men's Open in association with Volvo yesterday. The two-day tournament attracted some of the best golfers the region had to offer, including a lot of young talent. In the first round many of the golfers suffered from the blustery conditions, however there were some who used that to their advantage. One being the big hitter from Abu Dhabi Golf Club by Sheraton, Alex Charwani, who shot an amateur course record 68. Two other golfers also compiled consistent scores. The youngster from Emirates Golf Club, Matthew Turner, shot a one under par 70, and Nad Al Sheba Club's own Club Captain George Liu, scored a level par 71. These were the three who would make up the last group in the final round. In the final the pressure was on Charwani.
He was leading by two shots, from his nearest competitor Matthew Turner. Improve scores There are very few others, who have a chance of winning the trophy. The final day, saw better conditions, though there was wind still in the air, but it was not as strong as the previous day. This saw many further down the field improve on their first round scores. However at the top, everyone suffered with the pressure, except young star Matthew Turner, whose second day score of 69 gave him a winning total of 139. Turner said: "I played consistently not making any major errors, and I didn't let the wind effect my game". He finished 4 shots in front of his nearest rival Alex Charwani, who unfortunately failed to carry on his good form from his first round, shooting a 4 over par 75, to have a total 143. Third place went to Dino Varkey, on count back over Miki Muktar Mirza, they both had a total score 146. In Division A Saeed Malek, won with a total nett 136. Division B winner was Paul Smith with a nett 139, and Division C winner Damien Harrington with a total nett 129.
