Dubai: The Japanese plan to mount a global challenge this year.

"Kane Hekili is here to take on fresh challenges anywhere in the world," trainer Katsuhiko Sumii told Gulf News .

"He's got a purpose in being here. He is the best horse in Japan at the moment, and we now want to see how he fares among some of the best horses from around the world."

Sumii wants to gain as much experience as possible from his maiden journey to Dubai.

"We are eager to learn the basic elements of training horses here. This can only add on to our experience," he said. "We will take some more time when our horses will start winning in Europe as well."

"I think winning in Europe is definitely one of the main goals before us."

With Kane Hekili leading the field, Sumii is quietly confident of the overseas challenges ahead of him.

"This (Kane Hekili) is not the best horse I have trained, there are so many others. But we want to see how he fares on Saturday," Sumii said. "Everything is going according to plan. If he fares well and shows good form on Saturday, he is definitely headed to Europe for some of the big races, and the Stakes may be one of these.

"Secondly, he also loves the challenge of travelling.

"He's got used to the conditions here, and that's a very good sign.

This dirt course is different from the Japanese one, but he has adapted well," Sumii said.
