Dubai: Dubai-owned horses continued to revel at Glorious Goodwood, one of the highlights of the British flat racing season, as Orizaba landed the Group 2 Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes yesterday.
The strapping two-year-old colt, who was making what was only the third start of his career, provided Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, with his second success of the meeting following Yamal's victory in the Tatler Summer Season Stakes on Tuesday.
Orizaba brought up the fourth winner for Dubai connections at Goodwood, a tactically laid out race track atop the Sussex Downs which is regarded as one of the most beautiful courses in the world today.
On Tuesday Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance, saw his famous blue and white silks carried to victory by Richard Hills when Finjaan won the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes.
Earlier on Gulf Express won the Bank of Scotland Investment Service Stakes for English Derby winning owner and Dubai businessman Saeed Suhail.
Henrythenavigator wins
However, yesterday's feature race, the Group 1 Sussex Stakes, fell to Irish-trained Henrythenavigator.
The Aidan O'Brien trained superstar was winning his fourth Group 1 race of the season having completed the English/ Irish 2000 Guineas double before winning the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last month.
Channon, a former England footballer turned race horse trainer was proud of Orizaba and was already planning a challenging campaign for the juvenile.
"He ran a lot better than it looked at Ascot because he'd had a far from ideal preparation," said Channon. "If he stays with me he will go for either the Dewhurst or the Racing Post Trophy."
The Vintage Stakes has a reputation of unearthing potential Classic and Group 1 horses and Orizaba will hope to follow in the footsteps of former champions like quadruple Group 1 winner Shamardal and Sir Percy, last year's winner of the Epsom Derby.
