Abu Dhabi: Cuba consolidated their quest for the title of the Abu Dhabi International Women Volleyball Championship after coming from behind to beat Germany 3-2 (26-, 21-25, 25-23, 25-18-15-10).

Germany squandered a golden chance to upset the tournament's favourites after leading with two games but the Cubans recovered in time to win three successive games and the match for their second victory to lead Group B in style.

Cuba started their campaign in the tournament late on Thursday by defeating Russia 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-21

The Cubans, with most of their first senior national team, showed no mercy and committed the least mistakes to seal the result after the Russians surrendered to the supremacy of their rivals.

Rosir Clderon, Yumillka Ruiz, Uanelis Santos and Zoila Barros were in a class of their own and proved to be well prepared for the one million dollar championship, sponsored by Manazel Properties.

High hopes

The Russians did their best specially Natalia Safronova, Olga Fateeva and Tatania Kocheleva but that was not enough to stop the dazzling Cubans.

Algeria increased their hopes of reaching the second round from Group A after beating Australia 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-22) for the African Champions second win in a row following their victory over Egypt with the same margin on the first day of the championship.

On Thursday Holland came from behind to beat Italy 3-2 (27-29, 26-24, 20-25, 26-24, 16-14) to head Group A.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Abdul Karim Jalfar, the Chairman of the UAE Volleyball Association, has won another presidency unopposed after the nominations for the new board of directors was closed late on Thursday.

Jalfar, who was the candidate of Al Nasr club, has led the UAE VA in the last four years and have made tremendous efforts to improve the game.

The other nominees for the membership of the board of directors for the June 25 elections are: Abu Bakr Al Jasmi, from Al Ahli, Khalid Murad, from Al Wasl, Saeed Salim Al Kathiri, Bani Yas, Mohammad Abdul Rahman, Al Ain, Ali Al Hadi, Dibba Al Hisn, Abdulla Al Mannaie, Ajman, Fahad Al Mulla, Al Shabab, Abdulla Tayeb Qasim, Al Nasr and Mohammad Al Attass, Al Jazira. The nine nominees will compete for 5 seats.
