Kandahar: Gunmen in southern Afghanistan destroyed two mobile telephone towers on Saturday night, a police official said on Sunday.

This move comes a week after the Taliban ordered mobile phone operators to switch off their networks from five in the afternoon until seven in the morning, citing that militants were being tracked by foreign troops using mobile phones.

Following the expiration of this Taliban imposed ultimatum on Thursday, two antennae of different mobile phone companies were destroyed.

Since losing power in 2001, the Taliban have largely depended on mobile phones for communicating with fellow members as well as the media.
