Kabul: Afghan President Hamid Karzai has replaced the governor of the southern province of Helmand, according to a state newspaper.

The outgoing Asadullah Wafa had made a complaint to Karzai, which led to the expulsion of two senior European diplomats late last year.

Wafa had accused Michael Semple of the EU mission and UN political officer Mervyn Patterson of negotiating with the Taliban and planning to pay off militant leaders.

The expulsion led to a diplomatic row with the international community, particularly with Britain, which has some 7,000 troops in Helmand.

Wafa has been replaced by Gulab Mangal, who is regarded as a capable administrator without local ties to the tribally-divided province.
