Dhaka: Prison authorities in Bangladesh have ordered an investigation after a woman prisoner became pregnant after meeting with another inmate. They reportedly bribed policemen to arrange the meeting during a court appearance, officials said yesterday.
Jail officials said the 22-year-old woman, who was facing trial in an abduction case, became pregnant earlier this year after having sex with a convict serving a 13-year jail term for illegal possession of weapons.
"According to our primary investigations they met in the toilet of a court where they appeared on January 31 this year and the incident took place on the basis of their mutual consent," a jail official told the Gulf News. Deputy inspector general of prisons Major Shamsul Haidar Siddiqui said "this was an unprecedented incident that exposed us to a dilemma".
"We are not their guardians but if we receive requests from them or their guardians we may arrange their wedding inside the jail reviewing the legal provisions," Siddiqui said.
