Beijing: The Olympic torch relay’s journey through the earthquake hit Sichuan region of China has been postponed to allow the relief effort to continue.

The torch was due to pass through the province in mid June, but will now arrive the week before the games begin in August.

A statement from the Beijing Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG) said: "The relay leg will be closely tied to the earthquake disaster and relief work and will emphasise the theme of 'Torch relay, love and care’”.

It was scheduled to travel throughquake-affected areas, including Mianyang and the Sichuan capital, Chengdu.

Ningbo was the latest stopping off point for the Olympic flame, as the relay resumed after three days of national mourning for the victims of the Sichuan earthquake.

A minute's silence was held in the port city before the flame was lit again.
