Beijing: The death toll from Saturday’s earthquake in China rose to 38, Xinhua news agency reported on Monday.

The earthquake struck the mountainous border between the provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan in southwest China on Saturday. Xinhua put the magnitude at 6.1, but the US Geological Survey gave it a measurement of 5.7.

Relief teams are being rushed to the area, armed with thousands of tents and blankets to help the 152,000 people who were forced to flee.

Over 250,000 homes were damaged in the quake, and 467 people were injured, Xinhua said.

The region is still reeling from the devastating May 12 quake that killed at least 70,000 people.
