Tashan: Rescue workers continued searching for survivors buried under China’s disastrous landslide on Wednesday, as angry residents wailed and protested.

State media said the official death toll had risen to 56, but other reports suggested more than 100 could be buried under the stretch of mud.

Families and friends of the victims anxiously awaited news that there loved ones had been rescued, many accusing officials of incompetence.

Residents from seven nearby villages had crowded at a marketplace that was buried by the collapsed reservoir, the Beijing News reported.

Rain eased by Wednesday, likely aiding the more than 1,100 police, firefighters and villagers hunting for survivors.

Officials have blamed reckless mining in this polluted region that is scattered with small mines and smelters.
