Kishasa: Belgian officials arrested exiled Congolese opposition leader Jean-Pierre Bemba in Brussels on Saturday for alleged war crimes committed in the African country.
The International Criminal Court issued a warrant against Bemba for “four counts of war crimes and two counts of crimes against humanity on the territory of the Central African Republic from 25 October 2002 to 15 March 2003,” a statement on its website said.
Bemba, the former rebel leader who fled the Democratic Republic of Congo last year, is responsible for a campaign of killings and rapes in the neighbouring country, the ICC alleges.
Bemba, who had been in exile in Portugal, denies the war crimes accusations.
