Quito: Ecuador has severed ties with Colombia and Venezuela has said it will expel all diplomats from the country and the political crisis in South America continued.

The moves come after a cross-border raid by Colombian soldiers into Ecuador in which they seized documents which they claim links the Ecuadorian government to the rebel group Farc.

Venezuela and Ecuador have both sent troops to their borders as tension rises between the three countries.

Ecuador also said it had been in negotiations with Farc rebels to secure the release of kidnapped ex-Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt.

But President Rafael Correa said the raid, which killed 17 Farc rebels, including senior leader Raul Reyes had ruined the deal.
