Beijing: US President George W. Bush and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin met at the sidelines of the Olympics to discuss the conflict in Georgia, the White House said.
White House spokesman Tony Fratto did not provide any additional details, but White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said the United States backs Georgia.
Perino also urged Russia and Georgia to restart dialogue to "de-escalate the tension and avoid conflict."
"I want to reiterate on [President Bush's] behalf that the United States supports Georgia's territorial integrity and we call for an immediate cease fire," Perino said.
Military officials had said they were reviewing plans for the possible evacuation of the more than 2,000 US citizens in Georgia.
