New Delhi: India’s foreign minister has reiterated his government’s commitment to see through a controversial nuclear deal with the US.

Pranab Mukherjee told parliament his government was still pursuing international approval as well as at home, after Washington indicated time was running out.

The deal is being strongly resisted by the communist party, who has threatened to pull down India’s coalition government if the ruling Congress party tries to push through the deal, which would allow India access to US nuclear fuel and technology.

The statement comes as US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher is set to visit India to review the status of the deal.

Opposition parties from within the country’s coalition government say the deal undermines India’s sovereignty.
