Islamabad: Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday rang up his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh and congratulated him on winning the confidence vote.
According to an official report Gilani told Singh that his success was the "success of democracy" and said such democratic norms must be encouraged in the region.
Singh expressed the optimism that all outstanding issues between India and Pakistan including the Kashmir dispute would be amicably resolved.
Next meetings
Gilani said he looked forward to meeting Singh during the forthcoming South Asian summit conference in Sri Lanka. Before that the foreign ministers of the two countries would also meet, he added.
The Pakistani premier told his Indian counterpart that his country attaches immense importance to its relations with India and called for greater bilateral cooperation in combating terrorism and extremism.
Gilani also said that "a stable Afghanistan is in the interest of all countries in the region."
