Jakarta: Indonesia’s western island of Sumatra suffered a series of strong earthquakes that destroyed many homes on Tuesday, officials said.
The latest quake, which hit the western coast of Sumatra at 4:02 am (2102 GMT) measured 7.0 on the Richter scale. This was preceded by a 6.3 magnitude quake that struck the region three hours earlier.
Thousands of residents escaped their homes for higher ground when brief tsunami warnings were issued. However, as tidal waves did not materialise, they were soon lifted.
At least 20 homes and a school building collapsed during the quake. One person was reportedly injured
This latest event follows a series of quakes that are striking the region. On Monday, a 7.2 magnitude quake also jolted the western coast of Sumatra, while another 6.5 magnitude temblor hit late on Sunday.
